"Fashion & City": 150 Years of Budapest in Style and Fashion

Budapest, where the past and the present intertwine, is now celebrating its birthday with a unique fashion history exhibition at the Kiscelli Museum. The exhibition, titled “Fashion & City”, offers an in-depth look at Budapest’s fascinating fashion history. Led by curator Dr. Judit Anna Szatmári, the exhibition not only documents the city’s development, but also shows how fashions of different eras have shaped and reflected social and cultural changes.

“Fashion & City” opened its doors on November 17, 2023, just in time for the capital’s 150th “birthday.” The exhibition covers the period from 1873 to 2023, presenting historical and political events that affected the city, the development of technology, changes in lifestyle and, of course, how fashion has evolved over the years.

The exhibition is housed in the Kiscelli Museum’s stunning Baroque ruined church, where over 250 objects recall how fashion and urban life have intertwined in Budapest’s history. Visitors can view over 120 complete outfits, fashion accessories, documents and other special objects that bring past eras to life.

The interesting thing about the exhibition is that it is not just a fashion show, but also a cultural journey. The clothes and accessories reflect not only the changes in clothing, but also the development of the city's identity. Visitors take part in a kind of time travel, where the stories hidden in the exhibition evoke stylish chapters of Budapest's past and its inhabitants.

"Fashion & City" guides visitors to the intimate spaces of the Kiscelli Museum to experience the city's fascinating and diverse fashion history. Discover the tales of clothes and immerse yourself in the stylish cavalcade of Budapest! The exhibition is open to the public from November 17, don't miss this unique experience!
